Can I Get Life Insurance Without A Medical Exam?

There are several types of no medical exam life insurance policies.  Some no medical exam policies require you to be healthy to qualify for coverage while others ask no medical questions whatsoever.  No medical exam life insurance is costs more than fully underwritten life insurance and has lower coverage limits as well.  Here are some descriptions of no medical exam products available today.

Simplified Issue Term – If you are in need of term life insurance, there are a no medical exam options.  You must be in good health to qualify for simplified issue term.  You will be asked health questions and the insurance company will check your motor vehicle report, Medical Information Bureau file and your pharmacy database file. These policies offer higher coverage limits than other no medical exam policies.

Guaranteed Issue Life Insurance – If you fit within the age guidelines, anyone can qualify.  There are no health questions whatsoever.  Coverage limits are low on these types of policies and they can be expensive.  The most important thing to remember about this type of policy is that there is a waiting period for benefits.  If you die within two years of owning the policy, in most cases your beneficiaries will only get the premiums paid in with interest.  You must survive two full years before your beneficiaries will be eligible for the full death benefit.

Graded Death Benefit Life Insurance – Graded death benefit life insurance is similar to guaranteed issue life insurance in that the underwriting is very lenient.  You will be asked some basic health questions to qualify.  This product will not immediately provide the full death benefit but rather a reduced death benefit if you die within the first 2 to 3 years depending on the company.

Level Final Expense – Level final expense coverage is a whole life policy that does not have a waiting period for benefits.  The coverage amounts on level final expense policies typically cap out at $50,000.  There are health related questions but no medical exam.  These policies are meant to cover final expenses such as funeral costs, uninsured medical bills and other personal debts that need to be handled at your death.

When Should You Consider No Medical Exam Life Insurance?

Life insurance with no medical exam is an expensive coverage option.  It should really only be looked at in few different scenarios such as:

You can’t qualify for traditionally underwritten life insurance

You need coverage quickly and don’t have time to go through the traditional underwriting process

You do not want to take the medical exam (i.e. you hate needles)

You haven’t been to the doctor in a long time and you aren’t sure if you have any issues that might show up in your blood or urine sample.

Look at a Fully Underwritten Policy First

Even if you have minor to moderate health issues such as high blood pressure, sleep apnea or even diabetes, you could still qualify for a fully underwritten policy at affordable rates.   Although no medical exam life insurance offers the convenience of a quick decision and no major underwriting, it can cost much more than a fully underwritten policy.
